Dubphone, Patrascu – Talking Machines EP [Bad Barbie Records]

The USA-based Bad Barbie Records returns with yet another amazing pressing titled “Talking Machines EP” signed by Gazdaru Claudiu aka Dubphone and Patrascu. The two DJs and producers unleash a very engaging minimalistic tech sound, revealing two original tracks and a Dub Mix, all packed in a limited number of copies with the artwork provided by the talented Juli Jah. Founded in 2013 by the Colombian Toby Holguin and the Chilean Aldo Cadiz, the label is well-known for its releases with artists like Fictiv, Mihai Popoviciu, Daniel Sanchez, Herck and Xandru, to name only a few.

Dubphone has been active on the international electronic dance music scene for quite some time now, performing alongside numerous artists at various parties and festivals such as Castello Electronica Festival in Germany, Sonar Off in Spain, Dava Festival and Afterhills in Romania. At the end of 2012, he founded Vandalism Musique Group, followed by Vandalism Black Series and Seve17een, imprints that brought forward over 50 digital and vinyl audio works. Aside from the music he dispatched through his own playgrounds he also collaborated with Baile Musik, Ametist Records, Get Physical, Sleep Is Commercial and Habla Music Limited. For this EP he joins forces with Adrian Patrascu, half of the Bucharest-based TAP duo, passionate in the field of tech house, deep house, microhouse and techno. With an experience that spans for more than 20 years, he started to mix since Studio Martin and Web Club were around, sharing the decks with artists like Art Department, Ellen Allien, Francesca Lombardo, Christian Burkhardt, Steve Lawler, Livio & Roby, Kozo and Ion Ludwig.

Side A is reserved for the title track “Talking Machines”, an intricate multilayered composition characterised by solid percussive elements and synth modulations as well as prominent vocal lines that end up being the main element during the short build-ups while the bassline shakes the low-end frequencies. On Side B we first find “Chaos”, a darker piece designed with a minimalistic flowing rhythm and trippy background textures. The vast breakdowns include gloomy voices, wobbling effects and sharp metallic notes which reverberate throughout the whole cut. The closing cut features and alternative take on the title track where the voices have been removed and subtle notes are introduced in order to take advantage of the rhythmic features and grooves the original has to offer. Everything is created with a superb production skill set by the two, making the EP perfect for any dancefloor.
