Crihan – Autostrada Soarelui LP [UVAR]

After many years behind the decks and several EPs published with labels like Ultrastretch, Naural, More Than Music, Catren, Eliptic, Haze and his own playground Mezin amongst others, Crihan dispatches his debut LP in the form of a 2×12” vinyl-only package titled “Autostrada Soarelui” with local imprint UVAR. The material features six forward-thinking compositions, designed with warm and deep minimalistic sounds inspired by the artist’s fascination with the sea, which stands as a symbol for purity and motion. There’s also a subtle feeling of nostalgia embedded into the tracks, one that can teleport the listener into a multilayered daydream.

UVAR is well-known for its releases with Nu Zau, Sepp, Andrei Ciubuc, Ada Kaleh, Lumieux & Paul Agripa as Ragrip, Barac, Livio & Roby, as well as for its Limited Various Artists series where artists like Vid, Lizz, Cosmjn, Vlad Arapasu, Faster, Suciu, VincentIulian and Robert Apetrei dropped amazing tracks. The imprint also organizes showcase events from time to time, with the next ones being scheduled to take place in Bucharest and Morocco.

The first record opens with “Editura Estivala”, a spacious and steady-flowing cut which sees bass player Vladimir Giurgiu joining the production. The build-ups here reveal introspective harmonics built with long bright pads and swirling effects while the percussion incorporates syncopated patterns and breaks. Following, “Gazeta Olimp” raises the tempo a bit, delivering a stripped-down sound emphasized by solid bass stabs and numerous filtered layers that add an engaging atmosphere to the whole. The feeling is passed over to the B-Side, with “Eforie Sub” unleashing a serious minimal vibe, forged with thundering basslines and reverberating marine life sounds in focus.

The second part kicks in with “Hotel Mzr”, an immersive wobbling piece that features crisp percussive elements, vast build-ups and eerie background textures. You can easily imagine yourself in a hotel, on a balcony, looking at the calm waves of the sea on this one. Next, we find “Ducele De Chilia”, a very groovy cut, perfect for dimly lighted dancefloors. The approach here introduces to a slightly darker rhythm infused with a plethora of micro patterns that can take one into an intricate and enigmatic ride along the mysterious northernmost distributary the Danube forms in its river delta before reaching the Black Sea. Closing, there’s “Faleza Neptun”, a smooth ambient take flavoured with organic pads and downtempo drumming sequences. A must-have for any collector or selector!
