The fifth vinyl-only instalment coming from the underground record label P.U.N.C.H.I.S. delivers three original tracks signed by Italian artist CL-ljud and a remix by Vincent Casanova. Titled “Deep Space”, the wax is designed with intricate techy and minimal sounds that bring forward a delphic groovy swing.

Based in the USA, P.U.N.C.H.I.S. was founded in 2009 by Ozuky and Ben Pitcher and held a weekly residency at the world-renowned Beta Nightclub for almost 9 years. Now it resides at the highly-respected venue The Black Box, hosting parties every 4th Friday of the month, while also running a monthly radio show on di.fm every third Thursday with Sergei Loginov at the controls. The brand also functions as a digital publishing platform since 2014 and a vinyl-only imprint since 2016. Amongst the artists who contributed to both catalogues, we find Octave, Audiofly, Entoniu & Agape, Dubphone, Yanee, Khristian K, Giuseppe Cennamo, Enzo Leep and Dubquest, to name only a few.

Claudio Zomparelli aka CL-ljud is a DJ and producer who’s been active on the Italian electronic music scene since the early ’90s. From mixing at underground and private events in his home province of Latina, he travels to London and Ibiza, looking to expand his perspectives and perfect his techniques as a selector. In 2004 he becomes a resident for the summer sessions at Itaca on the Spanish island and slowly starts to look into production. Throughout time, he publishes his own sounds with labels like Whoyostro LTD, Bad Barbie Records, Play Groove Recordings, Tip Tap Records, Osmosis Audio, Kootz Music, Lucidflow, Archipel, Zeitlos Music, Simple Things and Fragments.

Side A opens with “Yep”, an eerie composition that gradually develops itself from dark and glitchy arrangements to bright patterns and a steady-paced rhythm. The percussion is infused with granular effects and abstract sound bursts while the overall tempo is kept minimalistic. Next, there’s the more uplifting “Sound” which features multiple rhythmic variations while keeping to the grainy elements. With the tempo set higher and the focus falling on the drumming, we can hear an evolving background texture from time to time which helps with building tension.

On Side B we first find the title track “Deep Space”, a techy piece flavoured with swirling synth keys and heavy modulated vocals that add a spatial feeling to the whole story. When the hi-hats come into play, everything changes and the cut becomes highly energetic. Closing the wax, Vincent Casanova takes “Sound” into a melodic dimension by adding luminous pads and delicate voices, rendering the remix to be substantially different than the original mix, thus adding his distinct touch to the EP.
