Various – STK01 [Stackenschneider]

The story of the Stackenschneider record label starts with a Various Artists compilation featuring Tripmastaz, Deepcase, Ki.Mi. and Pavel Iudin. Titled “STK01”, the pressing reveals four tracks designed with minimal and deep house flavours, suitable for any kind of party. The artists are all residents of the eponymous nightclub located in Saint Petersburg, Russia, close to all the main touristic attractions.

Promoting underground electronic music and hosting weekend parties with emerging or established local and foreign artists alike, Stackenschneider is named after a Russian architect who lived and worked in Saint Petersburg in the 19th century. He designed and built the house at Millionnaya street which was the first home for the club. In 2014 the venue moved to a more brutally designed industrial space in the nightlife destination at Konyushennaya square, with a spacious roof terrace for summer events and an inside dancefloor for the cold season. Among the many artists that performed here, we notice Andrey Pushkarev, Barac, Lola Palmer, Anton Kubikov, Denis Kaznacheev, Dubsons, Nima Gorji, Sepp, Sublee, Vlad Arapasu, Enzo Leep and grad_u, to name only a few.

Opening the wax we find Tripmastaz with “Noga Maksa”, a glitched minimalistic composition infused with intricate variations and modulations. The percussion and bassline provide an energetic frame of reference while the other layers create a complex musical journey perfect for peak time selections. Next, there’s Svetlana Yudina aka Deepcase dropping a spacious sound with “Faringait”. The steady-paced rhythm incorporates soulful chords and liquid patterns, while the bassline stands out as a playful pulsating arrangement.

The first cut on Side B introduces to the signature sound of Ki.Mi., the founder of Kashatskikh Records. Titled “Peresheek”, the piece flows at a relaxed tempo while the atmosphere is carefully built with swirling soft pads and warm reverberations. Closing the VA, Pavel Iudin dispatches an intense blend of modern and old-school electronica with “Idle”. The percussion is spiced with breakbeat-like sequences while the hi-hats display a great amount of dynamism, adding a hypnotic vibration to the whole release. A must-have for any collector or selector!
