feeder sound exclusive premiere: Lulla – Juju Embers [Cedesciu Wax]
The forth vinyl-only instalment to soon be released by the Miami-based imprint Cedesciu Wax is signed by label-head himself Marco Santamaria aka Lulla. Titled “Torromba”, the wax delivers four fresh tracks designed with minimalistic themes and marks the artist’s debut, with early support coming from Vlad Arapasu and Ted Amber.
Passionate about electronic music since he was young, Lulla started producing around 2009, consistently working on creating a unique sound. As time went on, he experimented with different styles and techniques but it was not until he visited the Sunwaves Festival that he had renewed the spark of inspiration. Upon his return to the USA, he began making music on a daily basis for a whole year amassing hundreds of projects and producing hours, a process which helped him accomplish his vision.
In 2015, he conceptualized Cedesciu Wax yet the label has been officially launched in early 2018 after a visit to Romania, where he instrumented the appearance of the first pressings in collaboration with Sonohat, Robert Apetrei and Macarie. Around that time, he also began working on the tracks for this EP, while 2019 saw him drop fresh cuts on UK’s Alter Hour and Florida’s Default Records.
“Juju Embers” opens the record, setting-up the pace of the whole EP. Designed with minimalistic patterns, it brings forward a steady-paced percussive arrangement backed-up by a wobbling bassline, glitched vocals and subtle warm background pads. Tension is built slowly through carefully crafted layering while the balance between the elements remains constant throughout the whole composition.
Following on Side A, “Juju Chills” reveals a hypnotic piece built around heavy modulated vocal samples and rotative textures. The crisp hi-hats and the prominent bassline render a good amount of energy, while the tempo spins around 125 bpm. On Side B we first find “Kalimboss” a very funky cut flavoured with a multitude of alluring micropatterns and the sound of the kalimba instrument in focus. The driving rhythm is complemented by the atmospheric nature of the closing “Torromba”, where spacious reverberations are elegantly mixed with a relaxed drumming sequence.
