Interview with Basti Grub

Here is what went down when we recently caught up with Basti Grub…

Hey Basti, how are you, what’s good and bad in your world right now?
Hey guys, things could hardly be better these days. I am on the road a lot playing awesome gigs, have great releases coming up on exciting labels, and most importantly I get to spend time with my son.

You are hugely prolific with your productions – how much time do you spend in the studio each week?
Indeed I spend almost every day at the studio, somedays are more effective than others though. But I guess that’s normal, you can’t force creativity.

How long does it actually take you to write a tune? Do you do it just in the studio or on the road too?
It took me some time to turn my studio into my ideal workspace, since then I only work there. It’s where I feel the most comfortable. When it comes to tunes it really depends on my mood and if I get into a flow. Sometimes I am done in 2 days, sometimes I need more time.

Is the crowd in your mind when you make a tune, are you thinking about them?

Honestly, no… I make music because I have the urge to express myself that way. If the crowd loves it it’s the cherry on the top 🙂

Where do you start on a tune? What inspires or influences you?

I don’t follow a pattern. Once I tune into something I like I start from there and almost instantly have the finished track on my mind.

How did you approach your upcoming remix for Barre Music?

I fell in love with the vocal and simply had to remix the track.

Are there rules about how much you can and can’t do to a remix for you?

I wouldn‘t say that I follow any particular rule. Whenever I remix a track I try to create something new that works on its own and yet reflects the groove of the original.

What else have you got coming up?

As usual there is a lot of new stuff in the pipeline. Music lovers should definitely get hyped over my upcoming release with Davide Squillace on his label This and That. The release is huge!!

What is your ideal party – location, set time, size of crowd, set length?

At the end of the day it’s the crowd that matters most. You can play at the most amazing club but if the crowd isn’t connecting to your music it’s pointless. My favourite set length is 3-5hours.
