Mark Thibideau – Lividus EP [Vade Mecum]
After his twin brother Matt released “Undae EP” with Vade Mecum under his Altitude moniker last year, it is time now for Mark Thibideau to join the label for its third pressing in the 10” limited series. Titled “Lividus”, the EP features two deep and dubby cuts crafted with analogue gear and a distinct vision when it comes to music making. With an intense activity in the electronic music scene spanning for almost two decades, Mark brings forward a unique blend of sounds, flavoured with warm textures, alluring effects and engaging rhythms.
The two Canadians are well-known to deliver amazing sonic journeys each time they play with their vintage synthesizers and drum machines, as well as for their collaborative work alongside Dawn Lewis as Repair and the release of numerous EPs and LPs under other aliases. In 2014 they were featured in “I Dream Of Wires“, a documentary about the modular synthesizer and people who dedicated themselves to deeply explore its technical possibilities through music.
Mark Thibideau‘s solo work is infused with eclectic soundscapes, complex synth programming and melodies full of feelings and colour. His rich discography includes publishings on labels like Archipel, Sub Static, Joule, Waehlscheibe, Cynosure, Secret Weapon Records and Obsolete Components, an imprint he co-founded back in the 2000s. Armed with a solid passion for electronic music since childhood, he’s always dedicated to exploring and experimenting, going well beyond genres and trends.
On Side A there’s “Push Pull”, a dreamy composition that sweeps the frequencies with its intricate arrangements and reverberating chords. The punchy deep house beat and the pulsating bassline provide energy while the textures and pads morph into a hypnotic melody, making the listener dive into an introspective state of mind. The feeling is passed to the B Side, where we find the liquid sounds of “Rose Blue Dub”. The patterns here are fully immersive and the organic nature of the track is emphasised by an elegant graininess that sustains the engaging core percussion and wobbling bassline. Dissonant synth notes add an eerie dimension to the cut while the driving rhythm flows steadily, submerged in echoes and modulations. A must-have release for the dub techno lovers!
