Misbits’ Pick: Merv – Cereus [Vade Mecum]

merv cereus

Merv, the veteran dub techno duo we enjoyed back in the mid-90s’, has made quite an interesting comeback in the last couple of years. And Vade Mecum’s limited 10” series, focused on reviving the lost sounds of dub techno, seems like the perfect home for them.

Following Altitude’s excellent Undae EP, Cereus lives right on the thin line between various electronic influences, a true expression of Merv’s versatile personalities. Both tracks share a classical dub techno backbone, a firm foundation for a sonic journey. The two tracks cast a dusty Detroit nostalgia over the reverbs coming out from the sunnier side of dub techno. Merv manages to give a rather danceable twist to the introspective mood, specific to the dub techno world.
