We had a chat with Ukrainian producer Yaroslav Lenzyak about his latest release on Alessio Mereu’s MAMA Recordings, the scene in Ukraine & more. Check out what he had to say below.
Q: Hi Yaroslav, thanks for chatting with us. How did the release (Out Of Place EP) come about on MAMA Recordings?
A: ‘I was writing music for about 6 months and collected some tracks. I’ve chosen 3 tracks from all of my collection and wanted to release it.’
Q: What else can you tell us about ‘Out of Place’?
A: ‘This release did not have a concept of the tracks, just what I thought would complete a great vinyl/EP’
Q: For those who are unfamiliar with your music, how would you describe your sound?
A: My music is always different, I like to experiment with my music’
Q: Who would you say are your biggest musical influences?
A: ‘I can’t select one person, there are lots of artists who can surprise me with their music every day. Let it be an unknown artist for example’
Q: What is the music scene like in Ukraine at the moment? Are you still based there?
A: ‘Yes, I am Ukrainian, and I love my country. The underground scene in Ukraine is growing up very quickly. If some day you are to stay in Odessa or Kiev, I can advise you to visit 2 clubs: Port (Odessa) and Closer (Kiev)’
Q: What aspect of music would you say is most important to your sound?
A: ‘I think groove. As I said, I like to create and mix different styles of music, for example today I’m working on minimal track, but next week I will be focusing on a more ambient, experimental sound.’
Q: Digital or analogue?
A: ‘Analogue, but also, I use digital plugins in my production.’
Q: What are you listening to at the moment?
A: ‘I’m not always listening to the music, but at the moment I am fond of DJ Krush and Aphex Twin’
Q: What was the first record you ever bought?
A: ‘Ehm, I think it was Moby- Go’
Q: What 3 records do you always keep in your bag?
A: ‘Soul Capsule – Overcome, Claro Intelecto – Peace Of Mind EP, DJ Metatron – 2 The Sky’
