Various – Pattern #4 [Patterns Of London]

The vinyl-only imprint Patterns Of London presents its fourth release, a Various Artists compilation featuring Christian Jay, V.i.c.a.r.i, Lee Hume and Malvito. Titled “Pattern #4”, the VA delivers four minimal tracks flavoured with experimental sounds and deep rhythms. The artwork is designed using optical illusions to emphasize the hypnotic nature of this 12”.

Currently based in Berlin, Germany, the British DJ and producer Christian Jay developed a unique style of music, incorporating microhouse elements with glitchy beats, garage breaks and strong basslines. Over the years he released with labels like Idle Hands, NorthSouth Records, Butter Side Up, Banoffee Pies and Kommuna Tapes.

V.i.c.a.r.i is just another alias of Tommy Vicari Jnr, a versatile and prolific producer from UK. His career extends for over a decade and his vast discography includes collaborations with labels like Comfortable Records, Dosed Recordings, 320KB Music, Quality Vibe Records, Robsoul Recordings and his own Armadillo Brand, to name just a few. From big club tracks to deep house and minimal tech his productions draw influence from various styles of electronic music and always have that “something” to make one dance.

After being a part of Drifted Records’ Mid-Flow Series VA, Lee Hume returns with another twisted composition. His music is a complex combination of genres with an accent on minimal techno, breakbeat and deep electronic sounds.

Malvito is a Portuguese artist that writes music beyond the common frameworks of house and techno, showcasing a new kind of melodic and minimalistic sound. His “Vertigo”, “Mirage” and “Street Cred” EPs were published in collaboration with Syncrophone Recordings, while his latest 12” drop titled “Boteco” was dispatched thru his own newly-founded label Berimbau Discos.

A1 kicks in with Christian Jay‘s “Wick”, a syncopated garage stepper, that exhibits the uncommon style the producer brings forward. The percussion is a stripped-down broken beat that incorporates glitchy patterns and the background textures are made of deep ambient pads. The cut has a mysterious nature as well as groovy balance. A2 titled “Ic” is signed by V.i.c.a.r.i and delivers a pumping sound designed with retro house elements. The tribal insertions in the percussion, as well as the subtle funky vocal cuts, blend with elegance with the pads and the crisp rhythm. On Side B we find “Re6” delivered by Lee Hume, a twisted cut that stands somewhere between minimal and IDM music. The track is built around a glitchy and fuzzy beat, spiced with heavy modulated effects and intricate background bleeps. Closing the wax there’s “Out Of The Blue 1”, a mesmerizing piece coming from Malvito. A whirling lead flows along with the breakbeat influenced percussion, creating a deep and relaxed atmosphere.

The hybrid sound of the VA illustrates the fact that electronic dance music didn’t reach an ending point and there’s still room for creativity.
