WAYWARD – GOOD AFTERNOON MR. MAGPIE REMIXED (SILVER BEAR RECORDINGS)

Following on from a brilliant year in 2017 and the release of their ‘Good Afternoon Mr. Magpi’ EP on Silver Bear Recordings, Wayward are releasing a compilation of remixes of the EP. Capturing the same eclectic spirit of the original release, the remixes propel the tracks onto the centre of the dancefloor.

The title track opens with the same subtle summer vibes as the mother track. Big Miz’s remix proceeds to move in and out of a grooving house beat with playful synths dancing across the track before landing back on the central melody, cueing the more chilled parts. Up next is Duke Hugh’s remix of ‘Calanque’, one of the more subdued tracks from the previous EP. Duke keeps it relatively toned down but does so in the most gorgeous manner. Just past halfway, a melange of wandering synth lines converge over the track to create a series of devastating harmonies.

The music gets amped up on the next track, courtesy of Irish heroes Brame & Hamo, who reinterpret ‘Shiva’ with devastating effect. A far harder-hitting techno affair, the track combines classic synths with a booming bass and drum combination. The ‘Shiva’ remix is a relentlessly pounding track, perfect for high times on the dancefloor. The ‘Reykjavik’, remix comes at us from Kincaid & Sinal and is a completely different sort of beast. With a steady bass pulse serving as the foundation, the rest of the track shakes above it in a manner that forces parallels with trip-hop pioneers Massive Attack.

The final cut comes from Frenchman Folamour thanks to his deft remix of ‘Human Spirit’. A more centred house track, this one kicks in with the nimble bass line ninety seconds in. Hawaiian sounding synths sound out the melody as the other elements drop in and out. A playful track that is sure to put an easy smile on your face, it closes off what is a wonderful remix EP that pays homage to the original in fittingly stunning fashion.
