Did you know that..
During the communist regime, in the ’80s, Romania was officially a caffeine-free country as it sought to reduce imports and coffee was one of those capitalist indulgences one can live without. A replacement drink was created from one-fifth decaf coffee, adding barley, oats, chickpeas, and chestnuts. Nicknamed Nechezol by Romanians, a word derived from the verb a necheza (to neigh), alluding to the oats (usually fed to horses), with the chemical suffix -ol giving a pseudoscientific touch alluding to Elena Ceaușescu, “world-renowned scientist”, wife of dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu. [source: wikipedia]
As a consequence, coffee trafficking could get one arrested, and it was a go-to charge used by authorities against activists or dissidents such as journalist Petre Mihai Bacanu, or writer Dan Desliu, who was placed under house arrest, facing charges of “illegal trafficking in coffee”, after granting an interview to the Voice America. In Romania, coffee off-trade sales reached 32,300 tonnes in 2016 thanks to volume growth of 3%. [source: euromonitor]
